Healthcare Applications
Why are Load Banks used in Healthcare
Load banks play a crucial role in healthcare facilities by ensuring the reliability and compliance of emergency power systems. Performing backup power tests using load banks can streamline compliance testing and provide significant benefits, despite the associated capital costs. Healthcare facilities must adhere to stringent regulations outlined by Hospital Accreditation Standards issued by The Joint Commission, as well as NFPA 110 and NFPA 99, which mandate the testing of Emergency Power Supply Systems (EPSS) on both monthly and annual schedules. These standards require that backup power sources supply at least 30 percent of their nameplate rating for a minimum of 30 minutes to verify their readiness and availability. To demonstrate compliance with these standards, it is necessary to apply a load to the backup power system for testing. While building load can be used for this purpose, its variable nature may lead to compromised test results if the required power level is not sustained for the full duration. Using load banks offers a more predictable and controlled solution for load testing, allowing healthcare facilities to accurately simulate electrical loads and meet the testing criteria. Load banks can be networked and controlled to provide flexible application options. The use of load bank control systems ensures that the load is applied consistently, and test data is automatically recorded and archived for future reference. This approach enhances the reliability of emergency power systems in healthcare facilities, ensuring they function effectively during real-life power outages and emergencies, thus safeguarding patient safety and maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.
