Why are Load Banks used in Microgrids

Microgrids provide an alternative model for power generation and distribution that can operate independently from utility grids in a mode known as “islanding.” This allows facilities and communities, particularly those beyond the reach of conventional utility infrastructure, to have reliable access to electrical power through local energy sources. Microgrids can vary in configuration and scale, incorporating sources like wind-powered turbines, photovoltaic panels, internal combustion engine-generators, battery storage, and capacitive storage. To ensure proper commissioning, operation, and maintenance of these distributed energy resources (DERs), load banks play a crucial role. Load banks apply precise and repeatable electrical loads to these power sources, converting the electrical energy into heat to verify performance and reliability. This testing process is essential for enabling distributed energy resources to meet peak demand and maintain consistent, efficient power distribution within the microgrid.
